Action Guru of Chinese Movies Turns To Romance

Hong Kong film director, writer, and producer John Woo can be considered one of the most influential icons to the action genre of Chinese movies and beyond. Renowned for his helter-skelter action sequences and constant use of slow-mo, his notable works include Face/Off, Mission: Impossible II, The Killer, Broken Arrow, and Hard Target to name a few.

After some years away from the big screen, we saw John Woo’s return earlier this year in a surprising venture away from hard-hitting action and into the romance genre with a Chinese movie of truly epic proportions. Set in the turbulence of wartime, The Crossing is a two part decade-spanning romance that portrays a turbulent period in modern history, drawing comparisons to the grandeur and scope of Titanic and Dr. Zhivago. Boasting a transnational cast of the most celebrated Asian stars the likes of Takeshi Kaneshiro, Huang Xiaoming, Zhang Zhiyi, Song Hye-Kyo, Tong Dawei, and Masami Nagasawa, the Chinese movie sets to demonstrate how love can survive and overcome all difficulties.

The Crossing 2

Picking up where it left of, the second instalment follows the three couples’ separate reactions to the communist-dominated Civil War, all the way to the boarding of the Taiping steamer and its eventual sinking doom that claimed more than 1,500 lives. So what if there aren’t any double-pistol wielding, sunglasses donning person walking through a flock of flying doves? A John Woo movie will forever be a John Woo movie, and that is a solid reason to catch The Crossing II now showing in cinemas!
