The Mekong River Massacre
On the morning of 5 October 2011, 2 Chinese cargo ships were attacked at the Golden Triangle region bordering Thailand and Burma. All 13 crew members were brutally murdered and a massive stash of illegal drugs was uncovered in the ships. This triggers a large-scale investigation by the Chinese authorities and police forces from Thailand, Laos, and Burma, setting the plot for Operation Mekong.
The film stars Eddie Peng as intelligence officer Fang Xinwu and Zhang Hanyu as Gao Gang, the captain of the narcotics task force. Together, they swear to bring justice down on Naw Khar (Pawarith Monkolpisit), the leader of the infamous syndicate behind the ruthless killings and planting of drugs. However, road to justice is a minefield hiding deadly surprises.
To stay true to the actual events, the production team went all out and flew to Malaysia, Thailand, and Yunnan for the film shoot and extensive research. Lam had also studied actual footages of Naw Khar as a major reference and talked to the locals for a deeper understanding and a more realistic take.
Being Eddie Peng’s third collaboration with Director Dante Lam after Unbeatable and To the Force, the action star jokes that he’s mentally prepared for another nightmarish training with the director, which indeed proved to be a real challenge. He reveals that the film required a lot of violent and intricately-designed action sequences. Actor Zhang Hanyu who plays Captain Gao Gang even had to wear a bullet proof vest, carry a real grenade, live firearms and 20kg heavy equipment, and outrun a dog! Talk about dedication in the film industry!
With all these said, OPERATION MEKONG poses a promising true-story film that is definitely gonna keep your grip tight on your seats! The Hong Kong Chinese movie is to be released in cinemas on 6 October 2016.
