Live-Action Japanese Anime Movies of the Year: Rurouni Kenshin

One thing Anime fanatics have in common is the non-satisfaction of being content with how great their favourite shows are. They just have to see their favourite characters transmogrified into living, breathing bodies of flesh and blood. Such is the pop culture today, where books are adapted into movies which become manga and then animated, not necessarily in that sequence but it is nonetheless a common trend. Hence we see more and more manga and anime today turned into live-action theatrical productions to feed the fantasies of adoring fans.

If you’re a fan of Japanese manga and Japanese anime, you have probably noticed that the past decade has seen numerous live-action adaptations of various titles which more than probable, include some of your favourites as well. Box office hits such as, Death Note, Nana, Detroit Metal City and many more have succeeded in converting multitudes of non-manga-lovers with ingenious plots, eccentric characters, and awe-inspiring story lines. Such is the influence of the big screen.

This year, on popular demand, Malaysia’s leading film distributor GSC Movies is releasing the long anticipated, live-action adaptations of hit manga series Rurouni Kenshin. Sequels to the 2012 movie, Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno and Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends are to be released back to back on Nov 6 and Nov 20 respectively.

After taking down the cruel Takeda Kanryu and his crony, the Battousai impersonator Udo Jin-e, legendary samurai Himura Kenshin (Takeru Satoh) has once again abandoned his life of ruthless killing and settled into a zen-like existence of pacifism in a dojo, accompanied by love interest Kaoru Kamiya (Emi Takei), comic relief Sagara Sanosuke, and young aspiring kendo practitioner Yahiko Myojin (Kaito Oyagi). Unfortunately, the much relished peace didn’t last for long when it was interrupted by a high-ranking officer of Japan’s newly formed government, coming to enlist his help to stop the rampaging Shishio Makoto. In short order, Shishio Makoto, successor to the Battousai position, is seeking vengeance after being betrayed and left for dead by the very government who commissioned his murderous expertise. Now Himura Kenshin grapples with how he is to reconcile the call to bloodshed when he has vowed never to kill again.
