The Pinnacle of 2015 Asian Action Movies SPL II: A Time For Consequences

10 years ago, acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker Wilson Yip who brought us a collection of some of the most iconic Asian action movies (Ip Man, Ip Man 2, Flash Point), gave us the box office blockbuster SPL (Sha Po Lang) which was claimed to have “re-launched Donnie Yen’s career, and saw him ascend to the upper echelons of martial arts stardom”.

This year we shall see the blockbuster return for a sequel, albeit in name only, as SPL II (also known as A Time For Consequences), this time directed by Cheang Pou-soi with Wilson Yip taking up the role as producer. SPL 2 once again amasses top tier superstars of the Chinese film industry Simon Yam and Wu Jing from the original film, this time playing whole new roles. Louis Koo, Max Zhang, Philip Keung, Babyjohn Choi, Jun Kung and Dominic Lam fill out the cast of what guarantees to be the next hardcore action spectacular which will be mostly set in Thailand. Speaking of which, SPL II will also see some Muay Thai action from one of Thailand’s very own martial arts poster child, Tony Jaa. Having broaden his global presence a little more in a fight scene with the late Paul Walker in the recent Furious 7, fans of Tony Jaa will now have an opportunity to catch him inflict pain in an array of gut wrenching fight scenes in this upcoming Chinese movie.

SPL II begins with undercover cop Kit’s (Wu Jing) venture into the world of crime syndicates in order to gather intel and ultimately apprehend criminal mastermind Mr. Hung (Louis Koo). His identity was eventually exposed blowing the operation wide open and he consequently disappears without a trace. Despite opposing orders from the higher-ups, Kit’s supervisor and uncle, Wah(Simon Yam), tracks Kit to a prison in Thailand. In prison, Kit cross paths with a local prison guard Chai (Tony Jaa) whose daughter suffers from leukaemia. Albeit their conflicting statuses and obvious language barrier, Kit turns out to be a suitable bone marrow donor who is able to save the life of Chai’s daughter. While Chai is determined to keep Kit alive, the warden (Max Zhang) wants him dead to ensure the smooth operation of the prison, which turns out happens to be a front for Mr. Hung’s organ trafficking business. Mr. Hung then shows up in Thailand so he can undergo a heart transplant surgery to save his own life. The stage is set for an epic showdown.
