The Malaysia Movie That’ll Make You Believe Again
What does it mean to be Malaysian? Is it about flying the Jalur Gemilang during the August 31st Independence Day celebration? Or celebrating diversity during the holidays? 3 years ago, the acclaimed director of best-selling Malaysia movie The Journey, Chiu Keng Guan sets out on a mission to demonstrate what it means to be Malaysian by turning a significant accomplishment our nation has attained more than 30 years ago into a promising box-office hit!
Set to open this January 28th, Ola Bola is a heart-warming cinematic reenactment that tells of the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of the Malaysian national football team, Harimau Malaya, in its glory days of the 1970’s. The Malaysia movie, inspired by true events, will feature the 1970’s multicultural Malaysian football team made up of everyday heroes – Chow Kwok Keong a.k.a. Tauke, Ali, Muthu, Eric Yong, Abu, and Ong Tiam Chai among others – who unite to fight for the country’s glory and qualify for the 1980’s Olympic Games in Moscow.
To simulate the genuine environment of 1980’s Malaysia, Director Chiu went to great lengths from speaking to Malaysian football legends, Datuk Soh Chin Aun, Datuk Santokh Singh, Bakri Ibrahim, James Wong, and Hassan Sani, to creating palpable reproductions of props and set dressings from old pictures. The older generation of Malaysians are in for a treat, getting to re-live the good ol’ 80s, while the younger generation will get to see our national team in its prime!
Get ready to laugh and cry along with a team of players that look past cultural and racial backgrounds, united by their love for the game, aspiring to bring the nation towards international glory! Catch the Malaysia movie that’ll school you on what it means to be Malaysian in cinemas this January 28th!
