1. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

From the director of Independence Day, Roland Emmerich came back with a Hollywood blockbuster disaster movie of the century, with the storyline about climate change that results in massive superstorm and bringing us back into the Ice Age.
The movie itself is talking about how paleoclimatologist Dennis Quaid saves Manhattan city and his stranded son Jake Gyllenhaal out from the disaster. The whole thing might sound ludicrous yet it is touching enough to make it into the list of top disaster movies.
2. Armageddon (1998)

Directed by movie-making prowess Michael Bay, this is a star-loaded blockbuster disaster movie that includes Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler. But most importantly it is about the idea of an asteroid is going to crash-landing on Earth in 18 days, causing the so-called “Armageddon“ – end of days scenario.
Being regarded as the highest-grossing film in 1998, Armageddon is considered as an epic success and one of the best disaster movies in terms of sheer destruction. From gathering the oil-drill team, utter chaos in space losing members one by one, to major sacrifices for humanity, this disaster movie has it all, a complete package.
3. 2012 (2009)

Have you envisioned your end of days? Inspired by the Mayan prophecy on the end of days in 2012, Director Roland Emmerich has once again brought it up on big screens for a scintillating escapade.
This disaster movie talks about solar flares reaction has heated up the Earth’s core, causing a series of meteorological events and seismic activity. It is practically awe-inspiring in terms of the gigantic scale of mass destruction and hopelessness in the face of mother nature.
Though we have passed through 2012, but this movie still gives us spine chills on what we are going to expect when the day finally arrives. That itself is worthy of being in the top 5 disaster movies of all time.
4. Ashfall (2019)

Starring with star-loaded actors and actress, from Lee Byung Hun, Ha Jung Woo, Ma Dong Seok), to famous singer/actress Bae Su Zy and others, Ashfall is considered as the biggest Korean disaster movies of all time.
Ashfall talks about an unexpected eruption of Korea’s tallest volcano and leaves the Korean peninsula in shambles. Seismologists warn this is only the preliminary eruption. There is a theory presented as it requires the help of Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit and a secret mission in reaching out to a North Korean elite officer that holds the key to the mission to stop the volcanic eruption…
5. Fukushima50 (2020)
Inspired and based on a true event, Fukushima50 is the biggest and most impactful disaster movies in 2020. The scale and magnitude of this disaster movie can be included as one of the top disaster movies of all time.
It recreates the tense environment on exactly what happened in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and how its site superintendent, the late Mr Masao Yoshida handles the crisis with decisive countermeasures.
Synopsis:
On March 11, 2011, 2:46 pm. Japan’s Tohoku Region was struck with a magnitude of 9.0, the strongest earthquake in Japan’s history, triggering a huge tsunami effect more than 19,000 people dead. It mercilessly swallowed the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Fukushima prefecture.
The nuclear reactors were unable to be cooled because of a crippling station blackout, causing hydrogen explosions in building after building. If the power plant was abandoned, Japan’s destruction was assured.
Facing such a life or death situation, workers known as the “Fukushima 50”, including shift supervisor Izaki and plant manager Masao Yoshida, remained on the site of the nuclear power plant on the brink. As the world held its breath and watched, they fought for their hometown and their families…
